What Are The Functions Of Automatic Transfer Switch?

1. Automatic power switching
Switching in case of main power failure: When the main power supply (such as mains power) is cut off, the voltage is abnormal (too high/too low), or the frequency is unstable, ATS automatically detects and switches to the backup power supply (such as generator, battery, etc.).

When the main power supply is restored, it switches back: After the main power supply returns to normal, the ATS automatically switches back to the main power supply and turns off the backup power supply to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

2. Manual switching function
Some ATS support manual operation mode, allowing users to forcibly switch to specific power sources (such as during maintenance or testing).

3. Protection function
Electrical protection: Prevent two power sources from being connected simultaneously (mechanical/electrical interlock) to avoid short circuits or equipment damage.

Delayed switching: Briefly delay before switching (such as the generator start-up time) to ensure the backup power supply is stable before connecting.

Voltage/frequency monitoring: Real-time monitoring of power supply parameters to ensure load safety during switching.

4. Status monitoring and alarm
LED/ LCD display: Shows the current power status (primary/standby), fault alarm, etc.

Remote monitoring: Some advanced ATS support communication interfaces (such as RS485, Modbus), which can be integrated with SCADA or BMS systems to achieve remote monitoring.

5. Application Scenarios
Key facilities: hospitals, data centers, communication base stations and other places that require uninterrupted power supply.

Industrial equipment: production lines, automation systems and other scenarios with high requirements for power supply stability.

Commercial/residential: Backup generator system to deal with sudden power outages.

6. Other functions (Depending on the model
Priority setting: You can set the priority of the main power supply or customize the switching logic.

Load hierarchical management: When power is insufficient, priority is given to ensuring power supply for critical loads.

Self-check function: Regularly check the availability of backup power supplies (such as generators).

Common types
Pc-level ATS: It is only responsible for switching and does not provide overload protection (it needs to be used in conjunction with circuit breakers).

CB class ATS: Built-in circuit breaker, with both switching and protection functions.

Selection precautions
The voltage/current level, switching time (millisecond to second level), load type (resistive/inductive), etc. need to be matched with the actual requirements.

Through the above functions, ATS significantly enhances the reliability and automation level of the power supply system, reducing human intervention and the risk of power outages.
